I'll talk about the recent evolution of Drupal, from my perspective as a core code committer for the current release (Drupal 7) who has also been involved (but less so) in the development of the upcoming Drupal 8. I will try to provide a balanced perspective on the changes that are being proposed for Drupal 8 and are actively being worked on as we speak. So, come ask your questions about the past, present, and future of Drupal, and learn how you can help shape that future.

Princeton University Library Drupal Conversion

Princeton University Library is converting our core library website to Drupal and is planning to use Drupal as our primary platform for future website development. Drupal is also an excellent integration platform for the many non drupal in-house applications the library maintains for search and research resource delivery. We'll talk about:

Understanding high performance caching with SSL

This talk focuses on two facts. First, we should probably all be using SSL on our sites. Second, Drupal sites have a lot of computational overhead (translation: they can be slow). There are some great caching servers available but SSL doesn't always play nicely with them. Specifically, Varnish, which seems to be very popular among Drupal developers, doesn't support SSL. In this session we'll gain a fundamental understanding of a reverse-proxy caching setup that uses SSL. We'll talk about these technologies in a way that should make them clear even to novice developers and we'll do a demo in which we set up a Drupal site that uses Pound for SSL and Varnish for caching.

Frontiers of CSS: Its Past, Present, and Future (in Drupal)

Over the last several years, browser support awesomeness for CSS has skyrocketed. We now have a large arsenal of tools on our belts to enhance design and UX on our sites. This session will inspect how far we've come in the CSS standard, where we are now, and where things will be going in the near future. We'll talk about cutting-edge techniques, how nicely they play with all modern browsers (maybe even some older ones), and where vendor prefixes are headed. Then we'll delve into responsive design, the CSS standard, and what this all means for Drupal. After this session you'll have a strong idea of where CSS is progressing.

The Importance of the Drupal Cache

This presentation will focus on the importance of the Drupal Cache for Drupal development. Discussion will include an overview of available options to improve Drupal performance, including utilizing the difference levels of the Cache, Drupal Pressflow and the Authcache module.

The presenter will discuss real-life examples of projects that benefitted from utilizing the different types of Cache, including Drupal Cache API, Boost, Memcache and CDN caches (Akami, CloudFront, etc). Attendees will learn which type of cache is best for their particular project, best practices for utilization and how to avoid potential roadblocks along the way.

Using Workbench to Improve Drupal Content Management

Drupal Coding Patterns

Having worked closely with Drupal for years, I've had the opportunity to work on really big sites for A-List clients, contributed modules and patches for core and Drupal Commerce, as well being a lead developer at dev shops supporting Drupal sites day-in and day-out, I've come to get a nice grasp on good ways to code-wrestle Drupal.

Previously, I've given talks at other conferences about advanced Views configurations, Drupal Commerce, and the likes, and I've noticed the questions commonly asked were about how I was able to code the pieces together to make the site dance.

For this talk, I'd like to do a round-up on some common code patterns I use. This will be a down-n-dirty code session, so it's not for the faint of heart. Some topics may include, and are not limited too:

- Entities (metadata wrappers, relations, etc)
- Better node patterns (how not to need a node--[node-type].tpl.php for everything)
- Views theme templates (and how to stop it's markup vomit)
- Display Modes, and the coders who love them.

I think the coders in the house will get a lot out of it, and I'm looking forward to seeing how my fellow hackers handle these common scenarios.

Intensive Beginning Theming

This is an intensive crash course geared toward those new to Drupal who are eager to begin theming quickly and correctly in Drupal 7. It is for those already well-versed in HTML/CSS and looking to begin building new themes right away. We will delve very rapidly into the code and structure of the .info and .tpl.php files. We'll construct a simple yet extensible and flexible theme from scratch, using other themes as references and inspiration. In the process we'll delve into how the Drupal theme layer works and, if time permits, how to theme for content types and views. We will move at a speed according to the relative ability level of the room, so get ready to get your hands into code!
